Each May, the NEI sponsors Healthy Vision Month which is national observance designed to elevate eye health as a priority for Americans. NIH worked closely with CDC for the 2010 observance and worked together to create a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) article, develop information for their Vision Initiative website and provided online banners and buttons linking to the Healthy Vision Month (HVM) site and to the NEI for additional information.

Hearing questions on the 2014 National Health Interview Survey

The purpose of this agreement is for the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) to provide financial support to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). The FY2012 funds provide partial support for the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and contribute to the development, testing, and 2014 implementation of the Hearing questions. The Hearing questions for the 2014 NHIS will be similar in scope to the 2007 NHIS Hearing supplement for the sample adult and, also, will include some questions for report by the parent/caregiver the hearing about their “sampled” child (age range: birth to 17 years old). This project is a collaborative effort between NCHS and NIDCD.

Heart Attack, Blood Pressure, and Cholesterol Questions in the 2013 National Health Interview Survey

The purpose of the collaborative activity is to support the development by the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) of measures that can be used to assess progress toward achieving Healthy People 2020 Heart Attack, Blood Pressure, and Cholesterol Objectives. The NIH and the National Center for Health Statistics collaborate on this activity.

Hemoglobinopathy Uniform Medical Language Ontology Project

The purpose of the project is to create a uniform medical language ontology for hemoglobinopathies. The ontology would be a resource for federal programs and extramural communities (e.g., researchers) to use when developing data systems that incorporate data elements related to hemoglobinopathies.

Hepatitis B Research Network

The Hepatitis B Research Network (HBRN), established in 2008 to advance understanding of disease processes and natural history of chronic hepatitis B, as well as to develop effective approaches to treatment with currently available therapies. The Network brings together clinical centers from throughout the U.S. and Canada. This multi-center Network is enrolling patients in multiple clinical trials in both adults and children with hepatitis B.

The Committee advises and makes recommendations to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Assistant Secretary for Health, and the Director, CDC, regarding the elimination of tuberculosis. Specifically, the Committee makes recommendations regarding policies, strategies, objectives, and priorities; addresses the development and application of new technologies; and reviews the extent to which progress has been made toward eliminating tuberculosis.

This federal advisory committee advises the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Assistant Secretary for Health on a number of issues related to blood safety, including public health parameters related to the safety and availability of blood and blood products; broad public health, ethical, and legal issues related to transfusion and transplantation safety; and the effect of various economic factors on blood safety and availability.

The HHS Behavioral Health Coordinating Committee is charged with coordinating behavioral health activities across HHS, and has five subcommittees addressing early intervention; prescription drug abuse; teenage drinking; integrating behavioral health care with primary care; and, behavioral health communications. NIMH and the ASPA are co-leads of the communications subcommittee.
