This survey follows more than 20,000 men and women over 50, offering insight into the changing lives of the older U.S. population. Launched in 1992, this multidisciplinary, longitudinal study has become known as the Nation''s leading resource for data on the combined health and economic conditions of older Americans.

This IAA is to fund the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Pediatric Practice Based Research Network (PBRN) initiative. The purpose of this IAA is to fund, oversee, and manage a research grant on a topic of mutual interest to the agencies. The funds will be used to conduct comparative effectiveness research (CER) and epidemiologic assessments of the use of selected psychotropic medications and the most commonly prescribed asthma medications in pediatric populations, as well as possible associations between these medications and side effects in this population in an existing electronic health record (EHR) based pediatric practice-based research network. This agreement provides needed supplemental funding and HRSA staff experience to conduct the U.S. survey component according to the HBSC study protocol developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization. The NEXT study was included as an option in fy2012. NEXT is a 7-year longitudinal assessment of a representative sample of U.S. adolescent and young adults, starting when they are in in 10th grade. This research initiative involves collaboration with the Best Pharmaceuticals Act for Children.

Health Equity Seminar Series: Racial and Ethnic Disparities and Pregnancy Outcomes

As a part of NICHD Health Disparities Seminar Series, the Institute’s Division of Scientific Programs (DSP) hosted a workshop to address prospective father’s role in pregnancy outcomes. This workshop brings together researchers, health care providers, and members of professional organizations to identify gaps in and barriers to research on this subject. The role of the father in child development has been well documented. However, much less attention has been paid to the role of fathers during pregnancy and child birth. This workshop took a transdisciplinary approach in discussing the role of expectant fathers in pregnancy outcomes, and how paternal involvement can impact differences in pregnancy outcomes.

Health Outcomes Among Children & Families Living in Rural Communities

This trans-agency conference brought together a panel of community members and experts from NIH Institutes and Centers, federal agencies, and organizations to identify gaps in research that address emerging differences between health outcomes for children and families living in rural communities compared to those in urban areas. Access to care and services remains a critical issue for improving the health of individuals who live in rural and underserved areas. A growing body of evidence supports the concept that a rural place of residence is associated with poor health outcomes and risky health behaviors. Further, multiple reports (e.g., Rural Healthy People 2010) have documented several unmet health needs of children living in rural communities. These children are reportedly less physically active and have higher rates of tobacco use, overweight/obesity, and dental caries than their urban counterparts. Further, differences in health behavior and outcomes can be exacerbated by poverty and low educational attainment within families living in rural areas. Although the NICHD currently supports research focused on overweight/obesity outcomes within this population, there is a need for collaborative research to fully understand the impact of all these health indicators on the long-term health of children living in rural areas. Additional research is also needed to further understand the barriers and challenges associated with the use of technological advances (e.g., telemedicine, telepsychiatry) to improve the quality-of-life of those living in rural areas. The initiative also addresses the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team (FIHET) goal of strengthening and broadening leadership for addressing health disparities at all levels by providing a model for the collaboration of federal agencies around common goals.

The overall goal of the Common Fund’s Health Care Systems (HCS) Research Collaboratory program is to strengthen the national capacity to implement cost-effective large-scale research studies that engage health care delivery organizations as research partners. The aim of the program is to provide a framework of implementation methods and best practices that will enable the participation of many health care systems in clinical research, not to support a defined health care research network. Research conducted in partnership with health care systems is essential to strengthen the relevance of research results to health practice.

The Partnership provides the opportunity for several units of the Federal government to work on activities related to the Heart Disease and Stroke (HDS) components of the Healthy People initiative. In particular, the purpose of the activity is to catalyze progress toward achieving the Health People goals through the various phases of prevention, including prevention of the development of risk factors for HDS; detection and treatment of risk factors for HDS; early identification and treatment of HDS especially in the acute phases; and prevention of recurrence and complications of HDS.
