The four standing working groups consist of Wild Animal Surveillance, Domestic Animal Surveillance, Phenotypic Characterization, and Phylodynamics and Computational Modeling. There are ad hoc working groups as well for specific topics, such as the Bovine H5 Outbreak working group as well. Members are mostly academic researchers funded by CEIRR, but also includes USDA, CDC, and FDA representatives, as well as NIAID staff not affiliated with CEIRR.

CDEIPI seeks to develop pathways for these "CFAR Scholars" to successful careers in science and medicine. OASH provided key information and advice in the development of this initiative.
Characterize Emerging HIV Strains from Blood Donors and Patients Resource Development FDA NIAID This initiative will continue research to develop a well characterized, dynamic repository of diverse HIV strains for diagnostics, drug, and vaccine studies.  To accomplish this, FDA and NIAID will collaborate in the work of characterizing these diverse strains and using a subset of viruses and plasma to develop globally diverse panels for evaluating performance of HIV diagnostic assays.  In the era of early ART and PrEP, the performance of HIV diagnostic assays in persons on these regimens may be compromised. By developing reference materials, it will enable cross-comparison of different assays using the same reagents.
