NEXT is a four-year longitudinal assessment of a representative sample of U.S. school children starting at grade 10. The goals of the U.S. NEXT longitudinal study include: to identify the trajectory of adolescent health status and health behaviors from mid-adolescence through the post high school year; to examine individual predictors of the onset of key adolescent risk behaviors and risk indicators during this period; to identify family, school, and social/environmental factors that promote or sustain positive health behaviors; and to identify transition points in health risk and risk behaviors and changes in family, school, and social/environmental precursors to these transitions.

|
The Health Economics program aims to support theoretical and applied research to understand how innovations in treatments, diagnosis, and preventive strategies can be most effectively deployed to improve health and wellbeing. Research supported by this program will identify factors determining optimal adoption of highly effective health technologies, innovations, and discoveries, so that past and future investments by NIH may have greater public health impact. The Health Economics program is collaborating with AHRQ and CMS to discuss ongoing efforts in this area of research.

The overall goal of the Common Fund’s Health Care Systems (HCS) Research Collaboratory program is to strengthen the national capacity to implement cost-effective large-scale research studies that engage health care delivery organizations as research partners. The aim of the program is to provide a framework of implementation methods and best practices that will enable the participation of many health care systems in clinical research, not to support a defined health care research network. Research conducted in partnership with health care systems is essential to strengthen the relevance of research results to health practice.
