The purpose of this collaboration is to inform the NIH and the Nation on the status of key measures of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and sleep health and disease prevalent in the US civilian population, such as blood pressure, serum lipid levels, risk factors for disease, airway flow limitation, reports of efforts to control weight, and reports of sleep disturbances. The NIH identifies the most key cost-effective basic measures for these conditions and behaviors, relevant to its mission and amenable to being utilized in a mobile hospital setting. NIH staff work with National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) staff to implement the most cost-effective of the measures, to monitor and help manage the survey in progress, and to evaluate and publish the resulting data.

For National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-14, NCI proposed and coordinated funding from multiple NIH institutes and the Department of Defense for two components: a new technology physical activity monitor to be worn on the wrist and measurement of muscle strength using a hand-grip dynamometer. The wrist-worn accelerometer will provide the first objective measurement of sleep duration in a nationally representative sample, in addition to measuring physical activity movement. The muscle-strength measure will provide an indicator of total body strength for children, adults, and older adults who are NHANES participants.

The purpose of this agreement is to provide funding for a collaborative effort with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) to pilot test the chemosenses component in persons age 40 and older, and implement in the survey pending a successful pilot. The chemosenses component will consist of 1) household interview questions to define the prevalence of self-reported taste and smell disorders, and to identify risk factors and confounders for the analysis of the taste and smell exam data; 2) smell testing using two modified Pocket Smell Identification Tests, a "scratch and sniff'' test with 8 odorants; and 3) taste testing performed using small amounts of liquids that can be spit out afterwards. For Taste testing, the respondent will be asked both to identify and to rate the intensity of the stimulus. (ADC12002001-1-0-0)

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), carried out by the CDC, is a national survey that annually monitors the Nation’s health through personal interviews of a representative sample of the civilian, non-institutionalized U.S. population. NCI periodically sponsors a Cancer Control Supplement (CCS) which is administered to a randomly selected sample of 39,000 adults. NIDDK provides support for the development of the diabetes interview components and funding for collection of data. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) related questions are posed to about 30,000 randomly selected NHIS participants every 5 years. The data from the survey provides many fascinating insights into the types of CAM people use, the reasons for which they turn to CAM, and changes that have occurred since the last time CAM questions were included in the survey.
