Research Initiative
CDC
NIDDK
This program aims to establish reliability in measurements of C-peptide, which is a byproduct of insulin production by beta cells and thus useful as a marker of beta cell function. In people taking insulin as therapy for diabetes, C-peptide is used to assess insulin production from the beta cell. In clinical trials of agents designed to prevent the disease in at-risk persons, or to preserve beta cell function in individuals with new onset type 1 diabetes, C-peptide is being used as the key outcome measure.

This collaboration is designed to provide funds to support the "Caregivers Survey Supplement" for the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) U01. NHATS will exam how the daily lives of older adults change as they age. This research will help scientists understand the social and economic consequences of late-life disability for individuals, families, and society. This "supplement" will collect data from the caregivers of the participants in NHATS.

Meeting/ Workshop
CDC, HRSA
NHLBI
The goal of the workshop was to develop a consensus model to standardize the diagnostic criteria used in newborn screening tests (e.g., a test to screen newborns for cystic fibrosis). This model will facilitate decision making and the ability of states to use similar categorizations when interpreting the results of newborn screening tests. HRSA was the primary sponsor of this workshop which included other Federal Partners (CDC, and NIH) and representatives from academia.

NIAID
Initiated in 2008, this resource was made available to the scientific community on a broad basis in late 2011. Lyme disease and related serum samples are available upon request for testing and comparison of new and current diagnostic tests with a common serum sample set for standardization. Samples are distributed by the CDC. CDC and NIH both provided support to acquire the samples and continue to work together to ensure the scientific community has access to samples needed for Lyme disease diagnostic test development.
