Combination Biomedical HIV Prevention Modalities: Research Design and Ethical Considerations
Meeting/ Workshop
CDC
NIAID, NIMH, OD
The purpose of this workshop was to review the potential impact of recent successful HIV prevention modalities on the design of subsequent prevention research studies, explore how these prevention modalities might affect the operational and ethical considerations of future prevention research, and identify research gaps and potential collaborations among prevention scientists working in multi-modality HIV prevention research. Potential topics to be discussed include: design of prevention trials (complexity of trials, sample size determinations, and choosing appropriate outcome measures); ethics of prevention trials (informed consent process, recruitment/retention, coercion, and standard of care delivery to trial participants); modeling the impact of multi-modalities on prevention studies; and integrating one or more prevention modalities into future prevention studies.

The NIH Comparative Effectiveness Research Coordinating Committee (CER CC) was established in 2008 at the request of the NIH Director. Its members include NIH Institute and Center (IC) Directors and high level senior staff. Its charge is to coordinate ongoing CER initiatives across the agency, develop a long term research vision for CER, implement collaborative initiatives with sister agencies, determine appropriate definitions, policies and guidance relative to CER, administer the CER funds awarded through ARRA, and track the outcomes of those projects. The CER CC has organized meetings with AHRQ, CMS, VA and FDA to discuss potential strategic collaborations.
