National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP) Public Education Campaign AHRQ, CDC, CMS, FDA, HRSA, IHS, OS NIDDK, NHLBI The National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP) is an initiative of the National Institutes of Health, designed to reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by kidney disease and its complications. NKDEP aims to improve early detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD), facilitate identification of patients at greatest risk for progression to kidney failure, promote evidence-based interventions to slow progression of CKD, and support the coordination of Federal responses to CKD.
National Longitudinal Mortality Study Health Survey CDC NIA, NCI, NHLBI A national, longitudinal, mortality study to study the effects of differentials in demographic and socio-economic characteristics on mortality.
National Mental Health Study Field Test Other SAMHSA NIMH NIMH is collaborating with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to develop a cross-sectional national mental health study designed to (1) estimate the prevalence of a number of specific mental disorders, (2) investigate disorder correlates and patterns of care, and (3) provide a platform for follow-up studies on subgroups of interest. The initial, currently funded, project will execute the steps necessary to build the instrument, obtain Office of Management and Budget clearance, and field test all procedures prior to launching the main study.
National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) Nanotechnology Signature Initiative on Nanotechnology for Sensors and Sensors for Nanotechnology: Improving and Protecting Health, Safety, and the Environment Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force CDC, FDA NCI, NIBIB Interagency effort to coordinate and stimulate creation of the knowledge, tools, and methods necessary to develop and test nanosensors and to track the fate of engineered nanomaterials in the body, consumer products, the workplace, and the environment.
National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) Nanotechnology Signature Initiative on Nanotechnology Knowledge Infrastructure: Enabling National Leadership in Sustainable Design Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force CDC, FDA NCI, NIBIB Interagency effort to provide a community-based, solutions-oriented knowledge infrastructure to accelerate nanotechnology discovery and innovation.
National Research Action Plan (NRAP) Research Initiative CDC NIDA, NIAAA, NIMH, NINDS This Executive Order directed the Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Health and Human Services, and Department of Education to develop a National Research Action Plan on post-traumatic stress disorder, other mental health conditions, and traumatic brain injury to improve the coordination of agency research into these conditions and reduce the number of affected men and women through better prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
National Robotics Initiative Research Initiative FDA NIBIB, NEI, NIA, NICHD, NIDCD, NINDS, NINR, OD/DPCPSI/OBSSR The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) created a "National Robotics Initiative" to promote research in a variety of robot-related topics. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) joined as a major civilian aspect of this coordinated interagency plan which incorporates the following funding agencies: NIH, National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). An MOU was issued for the period FY 2012-2016. A meeting of Principal Investigators was held in November 2015.
National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force CDC, FDA OD/OSP, NIAID NSABB is a Federal Advisory Committee established in 2004 to provide advice to the USG and leadership on biosecurity and issues related to dual use research. The NSABB is an influential committee and its reports and recommendations have shaped policy development. The NSABB also undertakes domestic and international outreach and education efforts to raise awareness of issues related to biosecurity. Currently the NSABB is part of a White House-initiated deliberative process to evaluate the risks and benefits associated with certain studies that could generate pathogens with pandemic potential.
