For the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-14, the National Cancer Institute proposed and coordinated funding from multiple NIH Institutes and the Department of Defense for two components: a new technology physical activity monitor to be worn on the wrist and a measurement of muscle strength using a hand-grip dynamometer. The wrist-worn accelerometer will provide the first objective measurement of sleep duration in a nationally representative sample, in addition to measuring physical activity movement. The muscle-strength measure will provide an indicator of total body strength for children, adults, and older adults who are NHANES participants.

The purpose of this collaboration is to inform the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Nation on the status of key measures of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and sleep health, such as blood pressure, serum lipid levels, risk factors for disease, airway flow limitation, reports of efforts to control weight, and reports of sleep disturbances, and disease prevalence in the US civilian population. NIH identifies key cost-effective basic measures for these conditions and behaviors, relevant to its mission and amenable to being utilized in a mobile hospital setting. NIH staff work with National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) staff to implement the most cost-effective of the measures, to monitor and help manage the survey in progress, and to evaluate and publish the resulting data.

This collaborative project developed and implemented an allergy/asthma focused component for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The allergy component, included in NHANES 2005-2006, enabled a more robust and generalizable investigation of the role of allergen/endotoxin exposures and IgE-mediated sensitization in allergic diseases than previously possible, increasing the knowledge of complex relationships between allergen and endotoxin exposures, allergic sensitization and allergic diseases, including asthma. This survey component queried on allergy and asthma prevalence and symptoms, measured levels of common indoor allergens and endotoxin in household dust, and quantified total and 19 allergen-specific immunoglobulin E levels in serum of study participants.

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) - started in 1957 - is a continuous, nationwide in-person survey of approximately 35,000 households, or about 87,500 persons, in the civilian non-institutionalized population. The NHIS over samples African-American and Hispanic respondents. NCI periodically sponsors a Cancer Control Supplement (CCS) which is administered to a randomly selected sample of 39,000 adults.

The purpose of the collaborative activity is support development and implementation by the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) of measures that could be used to assess progress towards achieving Healthy People 2020 respiratory/asthma objectives. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Center for Health Statistics collaborate on this activity.
