Indoor Air Pollution Conference Research Initiative CDC, OS NICHD, FIC, NEI, NHLBI, OD The World Health Organization lists indoor air pollution (IAP) from primitive household cooking fires in developing countries as the fourth leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The poor of the world typically use biomass (wood, crop residues or dung) or coal as fuel to cook and heat their homes resulting in high levels of IAP. Morbidity and mortality from IAP primarily affect poor women and children. For example, IAP is a major cause of acute pneumonia in children under five; in adult non-smoking women, IAP causes diseases as varied as blindness from cataracts to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to lung and laryngeal cancer. Although there has been decades of efforts to use improved stove technology to reduce IAP, the success of these efforts has been limited due to a lack of awareness of the problem, limited research into the health risks and the logistical challenges of solving a problem that affects almost 3 billion people on the planet. The National Institutes of Health led a 2 day workshop to present the state of the science on the health impacts of indoor air pollution and to determine critical research gaps that if addressed, will permit implementation of effective strategies to reduce the impact of indoor air pollution and to improve human health for poor women and children everywhere.
Influenza Vaccine Manufacturing Improvement Initiative Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force CDC, FDA NIAID A research based HHS interagency collaborative program with industry to 1) optimize influenza virus vaccine strains for production yield and 2) develop faster potency and sterility assays.
Institute of Medicine (IOM) Youth Concussions Project Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force CDC NICHD, NINDS This project began from interest among members of the Institute of Medicine (IOM)/National Research Council (MRC) Board on Children, Youth, and Families (BCYF) in developing a new activity focused on the topic of sports concussions in youth. A series of conference calls were held in early March 2010 focused on the health and educational issues associated with concussions/mild brain trauma among school-ages populations. The IOM first wanted to explore the need for a workshop or study that could identify key research findings, examine current policies and programs, and offer informed guidance for clinical practices, sports management, and educational settings. Congressional staff have also expressed interest in encouraging IOM to conduct a research review in this area, comparable to the 2002 IOM workshop on the consequences of head impact in youth soccer. To date: 1) IOM has secured funds for "planning meeting" towards a workshop; 2) IOM invites NICHD to attend a planning for the planning meeting on October 1, 2010; and 3) IOM in interested is securing funds for workshop.
Institute on Systems Science and Health Training Initiative CDC OD, NIBIB, NIDA This is a week-long training institute for behavioral and social science research investigators to be introduced to systems science methodologies (agent-based modeling, system dynamic modeling, network analysis).
Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Secretariat for Multidimensional Security of the Organization of American States (OAS) Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force SAMHSA NIDA, NIAID The Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) was established by the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) in 1986 as the Western Hemisphere''s policy forum on all aspects of the drug problem.

Interagency Artificial Pancreas Working Group Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force FDA NIDDK, NIBIB, NICHD The Interagency Artificial Pancreas Working Group is a group of multi-disciplined scientists and clinicians from the FDA and NIH to support the Artificial Pancreas Initiative. The goals of this initiative are to provide infrastructure for narrowing the gap between basic biomedical knowledge and clinical application of novel technologies, and to cross-fertilize and partner with stakeholders in order to identify and overcome the clinical and scientific challenges to the development of an artificial pancreas. Through collaborative efforts, such as workshops, the group strives to develop innovative strategies to achieve their goals.
Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force ACF, AHRQ, CDC, CMS, HRSA, OS, SAMHSA NIMH, NCCAM, NIAID, NICHD, NIDCD, NIDCR, NIEHS, NINDS, NINR The Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) is a Federal advisory committee that coordinates all efforts within the Department of Health and Human Services concerning autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The IACC mission is to: (1) provide advice to the Secretary of Health and Human Services regarding Federal activities related to ASD; (2) facilitate the exchange of information on and coordination of ASD activities among the member agencies and organizations; and (3) increase public understanding of the member agencies'' activities, programs, policies, and research by providing a public forum for discussions related to ASD research and services.
Interagency Breast Cancer & Environmental Research Coordinating Committee Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force CDC NIEHS, NCI The Interagency Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Coordinating Committee is a congressionally mandated body established by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This Committee is comprised of 19 voting members, including representatives of Federal agencies; non-federal scientists, physicians, and other health professionals from clinical, basic, and public health sciences; and advocates for individuals with breast cancer. The IBCERCC is charged with reviewing federal research efforts concerning the environmental and genomic factors related to breast cancer. This review will culminate in a comprehensive report for the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, summarizing advances and recommendations regarding research gaps and needs.
