The NIH Tribal Health Research Office (THRO) in collaboration with the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition and with assistance and participation from multiple NIH ICOs, and federal agencies, held the Federal Indian Boarding School Healing Summit on the main NIH campus from December 18-20, 2024. THRO conducted the summit to develop cross-cutting initiatives aimed to address the intergenerational harms perpetuated by the Indian Civilization Act and boarding school policies on American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities. This summit brought together boarding school survivors, community practitioners, and scientific leaders in intergenerational trauma research and intervention development with NIH leaders and representatives from 18 NIH institutes, centers, and offices, and federal agencies, including DOI, OASH, SAMHSA, IHS, VA, ACF and AHRQ. The goal was to identify gaps in knowledge and align priorities for developing initiatives within and across communities, NIH, and federal agencies to ensure a whole-of-government and community-informed approach in synchronizing responses to address boarding school and intergenerational trauma healing at individual, familial, community, and population levels. |

The Autism Cares Act of 2014 required that the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) designate a National Autism Coordinator to oversee national ASD research, service, and support activities, and prevent unnecessary duplication of effort, in consultation with the Secretaries of Defense and Education. The Autism Cares Act of 2014 also required that this coordination of activities take into account the Strategic Plan developed by the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC), and requested a Report to Congress concerning young adults with ASD and the challenges related to the transition from existing school-based services to those services available during adulthood. |
