Research to guide practice: Enhancing human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) platforms to address non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in low-resource settings (the HIV/NCD Integration Project) aims to bring together researchers, implementers, and government representatives to articulate practical goals, approaches, and a related research agenda to incorporate prevention, care, and treatment for NCDs into HIV/AIDS platforms in sub-Saharan Africa. The HIV/NCD Integration Project focuses on people living with HIV, many of whom are being treated successfully for HIV, but who are increasingly experiencing co-morbid diseases or conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and depression. This project has produced landscape analyses, is establishing research agendas and priorities, and supports products, including modeled data, to enhance NCD services through HIV platforms.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award program provides predoctoral and postdoctoral training to meet the nation’s need for investigators in biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research. In accordance with the Public Health Service Act and annual appropriations acts, NIH annually transfers a portion of these funds to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and Health Resources and Services Administration to foster the training of health services and primary care researchers.

Experienced investigators come to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to learn about management of a clinical research enterprise, including topics such as planning and budget development, protocol writing and tracking, and scientific review. Sabbaticals are self-directed, meaning that the participant chooses from a list of electives and helps determine how much time to spend studying each topic. The electives are offered by leaders at the NIH and other US Department of Health and Human Services agencies with the NIH Clinical Center being the most heavily involved.

Safe to Sleep

The Safe to Sleep® campaign seeks to educate parents and caregivers about the importance of placing healthy babies on their backs to sleep, for naps and at night, to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The campaign also describes other ways to reduce the risk of SIDS. The NICHD offers print and electronic materials, media resources, toolkits, and continuing education programs for nurses as part of the campaign. The Safe to Sleep® campaign partners with minority organizations serving African American, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American communities. The campaign concentrates outreach efforts in states with high SIDS rates; these states have high minority and low-income populations.
