The Nutrition Coordinating Committee (NCC) operates as an National Institutes of Health (NIH)-wide forum to review, stimulate, and encourage the support of nutrition research and training to better define the role of nutrition in the promotion and maintenance of health and in the prevention and treatment of disease. The NCC also plays a key role in the development of nutrition research policy at the NIH. NCC membership includes a representative and alternate from the 20 NIH Institutes and 7 Centers. In addition, offices and agencies within the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Department of Defense (DOD) have also appointed liaison representatives to the Committee. The NCC meets monthly to provide an open forum for members to report on current and future nutrition research, policy activities, and research funding and training opportunities.

Coordinate the efforts of multiple stakeholders (U.S. Department of State (State), U.S. Department of Energy (DoE), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), private sector) to establish a stable, long-term domestic supply of Mo99 (molybdenum-99) for medical purposes. Such a supply needs to be consistent with current international goals (to which the US is an active participant) of reduction in the use of high-enriched uranium in all reactors, including Mo99 production facilities, as well as full cost recovery solutions.

The Age-Related Eye Disease Study II (AREDS2) is a multi-center randomized trial designed to assess the effects of oral supplementation of high doses of macular xanthophylls (lutein and zeaxanthin) and/or omega-3 Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (LCPUFAs; DHA and EPA) for the treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and cataract. The primary objective of AREDS2 is to evaluate the effect of dietary xanthophylls (lutein/zeaxanthin) and/or omega-3 LCPUFAs (DHA and EPA) on progression to advanced AMD. This objective will be accomplished by collecting and assessing the data on approximately 4,000 AREDS2 participants aged 50 to 85 years, who at the time of enrollment have either: 1) bilateral large drusen or 2) large drusen in one eye and advanced AMD (neovascular AMD or central geographic atrophy) in the fellow eye.
