In 1987, CCMD recognized the need for national guidelines on HIV management. The initial guideline focused on prevention and treatment of pneumocystis pneumonia. This was followed by guidelines on mycobacterium avium and then on all opportunistic infections. In 1995 both CDC and the Infectious Diseases Society of America were brought in as partners. Since then these guidelines have been revised many times, widely disseminated in print and on the web, and are the global standard for care. These have been funded by OAR.
