SGMRO works to coordinate and/or host Scientific Workshops and other activities on topics critical to advancing health research that is inclusive of SGM populations. Past workshops are publicly available as resources for researchers and those below are specifically focused on SGM methods and measurements. Here, you will also be able to find links to other NIH activities specifically focused on methods and measurement.
April 2018 Workshop: Methods and Measurement in Sexual & Gender Minority Health Research
In April 2018 the SGMRO hosted a workshop that covered three areas of research: SGM status, related measures, and sampling. The workshop, entitled Methods and Measurement in Sexual & Gender Minority Health Research, was guided by the schema below. For each of these primary topics, experts in the field considered the current state of research and identified a number of research opportunities that, if explored, would advance the field of SGM-related measurement research.
Summary of Comments on Methods & Measurement in Sexual & Gender Minority Health Research (Released September 2019)
Following the April 2018 workshop, to obtain additional comments on the specific components of the Methods & Measurement in Sexual & Gender Minority Health Research: Developing a Research Agenda and Identifying Research Opportunities report for the purposes of informing and enhancing its content, a public notice was published in the Federal Register on March 15, 2019. The deadline for comments was April 15, 2019. A summary of comments received during that period is available to view.
The Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology (FCSM)
The FCSM serves as a resource for OMB and the federal statistical system to inform decision making on matters of statistical policy and to provide technical assistance and guidance on statistical and methodological issues. The FCSM sponsors regular conferences (in partnership with the Council on Professional Associations on Federal Statistics), hosts seminars and workshops (often in collaboration with partner organizations such as the Washington Statistical Society), writes reports aimed at the federal statistical system and the community, and creates subcommittees and interest groups focused on topics relevant to the federal statistical community. The Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Sex Characteristics (SOGISC) is an interest group of the FCSM.
The Measuring Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Research Group explores the best practices of the measurement of SOGI in the context of Federal information collections. The Group provides ongoing opportunities for individuals interested in statistical methods or data quality related to SOGI to interact, exchange information, and explore issues related to this topic.
