The National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR) brings together four of the nation’s leading research funders – the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the U. S. Department of Agriculture – to address the problem of childhood obesity in America. NCCOR focuses on efforts that have the potential to benefit children, teens, their families, and the communities in which they live. A special emphasis is put on the populations and communities in which obesity rates are highest and rising the fastest. NCCOR''s goals are to identify intervention needs, improve child obesity surveillance, improve research and evaluation methodologies, and provide national leadership to implement evidence-based practice and policy. NCCOR also works with many non-health partners to develop sustainable environmental design and food systems strategies to reach high risk populations and communities.

This U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-based program provides basic information about the nutrient content of highly consumed foods and dietary supplements in the U.S. The five Specific Aims of the National Food and Nutrient Analysis Program (NFNAP) are to: 1) establish a monitoring program for Key Foods and critical nutrients. Key Foods are frequently consumed foods and ingredients, which contributed, collectively, more than 75% of the intake of any specific nutrient for the U.S. population; 2) conduct comprehensive analyses of selected Key Foods; 3) develop databases for high priority foods consumed by U.S. ethnic subpopulations; 4) develop databases for new bioactive components; and 5) develop a validated database for ingredients in dietary supplements. Approximately 1,100 food items have been sampled and analyzed in the last 7 years. The National Cancer Institute Division of Cancer Prevention coordinates a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-USDA collaboration that focuses on the content of bioactive food components that are consumed as foods or dietary supplements. These components, such as Vitamin D, trans and omega-3 fatty acids, and sodium, will be characterized and measured for their content and contribution to total daily intake. New databases have also been added for flavonoid content of selected foods and sulfur-containing bioactive compounds.
