Beginning in 2011, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has convened a Federal Interagency Task Force on the Arts and Human Development to encourage more and better research on how the arts can help people reach their full potential at all stages of life. Task force members represent multiple units across the federal government, including the US Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the US Department of Education, among others. To date, the Task Force has met quarterly to share ideas and information about research gaps and opportunities for understanding the arts' role in improving health and educational outcomes throughout the lifespan. The Task Force has conducted a series of public webinars on compelling research and practices. Additionally, the group has begun a literature review of research on the arts and human development. In November 2012, four Task Force member agencies hosted a first-ever convening at the National Academy of Sciences to review the current state of research on the arts, health, and well-being in older Americans.

The charge of the Interagency Committee includes promoting collaboration among federal agencies. A goal of this committee is to develop a national “Roadmap” for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This strategic planning effort will represent the collective expertise of providers, educators, advocates, federal/state/national organizations, and individuals with TBI and their families and will result in a consensus document outlining the critical elements of a successful system of care for TBI service delivery. Outcomes of the planning effort include the adoption of National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Common Data Elements for TBI research, and creation of the FITBIR Informatics System to store data from TBI patients and controls enrolled in studies funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) and National Institutes of Health (NIH). The FITBIR Informatics System was developed to share data across the entire TBI research field and to facilitate collaboration between laboratories, as well as interconnectivity with other informatics platforms.

The Federal Interagency Workgroup on Autism Spectrum Disorders (FIWA) is composed of representatives from departments and agencies across the U.S. Government, who voluntarily meet to coordinate research, services, and support activities related to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The FIWA was first convened as an interagency workgroup to address requirements of the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education, and Support (CARES) Act of 2014 (PL 113-157), and subsequently continues to meet to address the requirements of the Autism CARES Act of 2019 (PL 116-60). The Autism CARES Act of 2014 required that the Secretary of Health and Human Services designate a National Autism Coordinator to oversee national ASD research, service, and support activities, and prevent unnecessary duplication of effort, in consultation with the Secretaries of Defense and Education. The Autism CARES Act of 2019 also required that this coordination of activities take into account the Strategic Plan developed by the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee and requested a Report to Congress concerning the Health and Wellbeing of Individuals with ASD, published September 2021. Following Dr. Ann Wagner's retirement from federal service on July 2021, Dr. Susan Daniels assumed the role of Acting National Autism Coordinator.
