FIC, NCI, NIEHS, CDC''s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves are supporting Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth) Hubs. These are regional hubs based at low- or middle-income country (LMIC) institutions focused on collaborative research, data management, training, curriculum development, and policy support around high-priority local, national, and regional environmental and occupational health threats. The expectation is that GEOHealth Hubs will become the lead resources for environmental and occupational health, attract and retain the best talent in the region, and provide the scientific evidence for policy formulation. Together all regional hubs supported will form the GEOHealth Network, a platform for coordinated environmental and occupational health research and research training activities. FIC and its partners are supporting linked U2R and U01 awards to US and LMIC institutions, respectively. All partners contribute funds to the program.

The Global Ingredient Archival System is a project that aims to provide a common identifier for all of the substances used in medicinal products, utilizing a consistent definition of substances globally, including active substances under clinical investigation, consistent with the ISO 11238 standard. The FDA is utilizing software from this project to meet their obligations under the Identification of Medicinal Products (IDMP) global regulatory scheme. In 2016, the software was deployed onto FDA internal systems and FDA’s existing data was migrated into their instance (internally called Global Substance Registration Service (GSRS)). A public version of FDA’s substance definitions for use by researchers outside the agency was made available through NCATS’ website for the project.

Cancer incidence and mortality are rising rapidly worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. There is an overwhelming need for countries to adopt and implement cancer control actions. Yet only one in five low- and middle-income countries have the necessary data to drive policy and reduce the burden and suffering due to cancer. The Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR) is a coordinated, multi-partner approach to deliver the required change. Its objective is to make cancer data count.
