NSABB is a Federal Advisory Committee established in 2004 to provide advice to the USG and leadership on biosecurity and issues related to dual use research. The NSABB is an influential committee and its reports and recommendations have shaped policy development. The NSABB also undertakes domestic and international outreach and education efforts to raise awareness of issues related to biosecurity. Currently the NSABB is part of a White House-initiated deliberative process to evaluate the risks and benefits associated with certain studies that could generate pathogens with pandemic potential.

The NSTC Committee on Science (CoS), operated out of OSTP, aims to coordinate all Federal efforts in science by establishing a structure to improve Federal government planning and coordination of R&D and by ensuring that Federal R&D efforts are balanced, integrated, and comprehensive. One of the goals of CoS is to ensure that science is considered in development and implementation of Federal policies and programs. CoS membership includes : USDA, DoC, DoD, ED, HHS, DHS, DOI, DOJ, DOL, State, DoT, Treasury, VA, EPA, NASA, NSF, and the Smithsonian, as well as OSTP and OMB. In addition to the activities of the main committee, CoS oversees about a dozen interagency subcommittees and working groups on topics ranging from the microbiome to research business models. These subgroups often involve staff from other NIH ICs that have the appropriate subject matter expertise.

The purpose of this Interagency Agreement is to provide funds to the NCHS to continue support of the National Survey of Family Growth. The NICHD contribution will supplement the collection of data on contraceptive practices, fertility, and background factors among women and men 15-44 years of age. This will support continuous interviewing for a cumulative data file. The National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) gathers information on family life, marriage and divorce, pregnancy, infertility, use of contraception, and men’s and women’s health. The survey results are used by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and others to plan health services and education programs, and to do statistical studies of families, fertility, and health.

NCI
|
NCI and the CDC are collaborating on a longitudinal human feeding study of processed meats and drinking water nitrate conducted by Maastricht University. CDC researchers are measuring volatile nitrosamines (NOCs) and nitrate concentrations in urine samples taken before and after consumption different types of processed meats with and without intake of nitrate in drinking water. NCI will also evaluate nitrate and nitrosamine excretion levels in relation to the the oral microbiome. Results from this study will characterize NOC formed from water nitrate and processed meat ingestion.
