This subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council''s Committee on Technology is responsible for coordinating the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI). The NNI was established in 2001 to coordinate federal research and development in
nanotechnology by providing a vision of the long-term benefits and opportunities offered by nanotechnology and acting as a locus for communication, cooperation, and collaboration between federal agencies involved in nanotechnology research and development. In 2011, the NSET developed a strategic plan that encompasses a comprehensive nanotechnology R&D initiative built on shared goals, priorities, and strategies that complement agency-specific missions and activities.

SPIROMICS (SubPopulations and Intermediate Outcome Measures In Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Study) is an observational study of COPD that seeks to identify practical intermediate outcome measures and mechanistically homogeneous subgroups of patients with the disease. The study was developed in cooperation with the FDA and will be implemented with industrial partners.

A multi-agency federal workgroup was formed to inform the development of a Surgeon General’s document on prescription drug abuse. An expert panel meeting was held in 2011 to receive input from researchers, public health officials, clinicians, military and law enforcement personnel on the magnitude of the problem and effective interventions to address it. As a result, the federal workgroup is now developing a Call to Action to Prevent Prescription Drug Abuse Among Youth.
