NIH-FDA Medical Device Research Interest Group (MDRIG) Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force CMS, FDA NIBIB, NCATS, NCI, NEI, NHLBI, NIA, NIAID, NICHD, NIDDK, NINR, OD/DPCPSI/ORIP, FIC, NIAMS, NIDA, NCCIH, NHGRI, NIAAA, NIDCD, NIGMS, NIEHS, NLM, OD MDRIG meets quarterly to share information and ideas on supporting research throughout the device development pipeline. Recent topics of interest included clinical innovation and translation efforts, artificial intelligence and machine learning in imaging, digital twins, and early feasibility supplements for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grantees that would facilitate grantee Food and Drug Administration (FDA) meetings and communication in the formative years to increase appropriate planning during the development of their technologies toward eventual FDA approval. Recently, a successful pilot program was launched through collaboration between the NCI and FDA. Scalability to other institutes was discussed. Supported by NIBIB, MDRIG continues to meet four times per year. In 2018, NIBIB hosted a trans-NIH workshop on gadolinium retention in patients after magnetic resonance imaging. Collaborators included the extramural medical imaging community. A subsequent widely referenced white paper identified gaps in knowledge and future areas for research. This workshop included FDA participation.
NIH/BARDA Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Diagnostic Challenge Working Group Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force ASPR, FDA, CDC NIAID The Working Group designed, launched, and managed the largest USG Challenge competition of $20M through each of the three stages during the 5 years of the competition. The goal was to support the development of novel, innovative, rapid, point-of-need diagnostic in vitro assays to improve antibiotic stewardship and decrease the rapidly expanding AMR pandemic.
NIMH-SAMHSA collaboration to support the delivery of evidence based practices in Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic-Expansion (CCBHC-E) awardees Research Initiative SAMHSA NIMH, NIDA The goal of this collaboration is to identify mutual National Institute of Mental Health (NIHMH) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) priority areas of interest and to develop relevant funding initiatives that will invest in mental health services and implementation science research to support the adoption and sustained fidelity of evidence-based practices in Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic-Expansion awardees.
NINDS Common Data Elements Program Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force CDC, FDA NINDS, CIT, NICHD, NEI, NHGRI, NCATS, NIA, NIMH, NIEHS, NIGMS, NIBIB, NIDDK, NIDCR, NINR, NHLBI NINDS works closely with the research community (academia and industry), patient advocates, and other federal agencies to develop and maintain data standards called common data elements (CDEs). Data standards facilitate data collection and data sharing in clinical research. Through the efforts of several working groups, CDEs have been developed for use in adult and pediatric research studies of many neurological disorders, including ALS, cerebral palsy, Chiari I malformation, epilepsy, Friedreich’s ataxia, headache, Huntington’s disease, mitochondrial disease, multiple sclerosis, ME/CFS, several neuromuscular diseases, Parkinson’s, spinal cord injury, stroke, and TBI.
NIOSH SGM Equity Work Group Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force CDC OD/DPCPSI/SGMRO The National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, part of CDC, organized a SGM work group in 2021 to advance inclusion of SGM populations in data collection and work related to occupational health and safety. There are not good demographic data available about experiences and differences in LGBTQI+ folks experienced at work or ways to look for systematic barriers or disparities for these populations in workforce settings.
Nipah viral replicon particle vaccine safety & efficacy evaluation in NHP model Research Initiative CDC NIAID Testing in nonhuman primates of a newly developed vaccine for protection against Nipah virus infection
NITRD Digital Health R&D Interagency Working Group Committee, Work group, Advisory group, or Task Force AHRQ, FDA, ONC NCI, NCATS, NHLBI, NIA, NIMH, NIBIB, NICHD, OD/DPCPSI/OBSSR, OD/OSP The Digital Health R&D (DHRD) Interagency Working Group was formed in 2010 as the Health Information Technology R&D IWG to coordinate Federal R&D for improving medical, functional, and public health outcomes across 15 participating agencies. Guided by the four fundamental challenges described in the Federal Health Information Technology Research Development Strategic Framework, the IWG advances R&D by coordinating agency plans and activities, promoting collaborations, and providing a forum for exchanging information and articulating R&D needs to policy-makers and decision-makers
Non-animal approaches to assess cardiotoxicity hazard Research Initiative FDA NIEHS This project aims to identify and develop human cell- and protein-based assays, as well as in silico QSAR models, to more efficiently screen drugs and chemicals for their potential to be toxic to the heart or circulatory system
Noroviruses and Epidemic Gastroenteritis Research Initiative FDA OD/OIR, NIAID Noroviruses and Epidemic Gastroenteritis
Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Priority Research Opportunities in Crisis Response Services Research Initiative SAMHSA NIMH The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) collaborated with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to develop a Notice of Special Interest (NOT-MH-23-140) that communicates priority research opportunities in crisis response services. This includes research on 1) treatment and services interventions; 2) triage, dispatch, and other forms of decision support; and 3) strategies to promote service engagement/continuity and quality of care.
