The NIH-FDA Joint Leadership Council work together to help ensure that regulatory considerations form an integral component of biomedical research planning and the latest science is integrated into the regulatory review process. Such collaboration and integration will advance the development of new products for the treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of common and rare diseases and enhance the safety, quality, and efficiency of the clinical research and medical product approval enterprise. The formation of the Leadership Council represents a commitment on the part of both agencies to forge a strong partnership and to leverage the strengths of each agency toward this common goal.

The Medical Device Research Interest Group (MDRIG) meets quarterly to share information and ideas on supporting research throughout the development pipeline. Recent topics of interest include an early feasibility supplement for SBIR grantees that would facilitate grantee-FDA meetings and communication in the formative years in order to increase appropriate planning during the development of their technologies toward FDA approval. NHLBI is supporting a pilot of this concept and the group will incorporate feedback from this pilot into their planning. MDRIG is also planning to conduct a portfolio analysis to inform future grant funding.

NIBIB co-chairs the NIH-Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Working Group on Point of Care (POC) Diagnostics. This group of government and private partners is working to identify and collaborate on projects to develop diagnostic tests for low resource areas. One area of focus is to leverage resources for the development of a rapid POC diagnostic test for viral infections such as HIV or influenza. NIBIB hosted a working group session on March 30, 2017, that focused on patient access to health diagnostics. Ideas from this session were presented at the larger NIH-BMGF meeting on June 30, 2017, hosted by NIH.

Over the past 10 years, health care delivery for Northwest American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) has evolved from a centralized system maintained by the Indian Health Service (IHS) to a diverse and complex environment. The Northwest Tribal Registry Project was developed in January 1999 by the Northwest Tribal Epidemiology Center, a tribally operated program located at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB) in Portland, Oregon. The Project works with state health organizations to correct racial misclassification for AI/AN in disease registries, obtain accurate estimates of the cancer burden, and to generate health status information for tribes and health programs. NCI contributes funding to the IHS for this project through the Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH) program.

The Nutrition Research Coordinating Committee (NRCC) was established by the NIH Office of the Director in 1975 to improve communication and research coordination of nutrition activities within the NIH and across the federal government. Today it provides an open forum for members to discuss current and future nutrition research challenges and opportunities. The NRCC has broad representation from the NIH institutes and centers. In addition, liaisons from other federal offices and agencies also participate. The NRCC meets monthly, alternating between intra-NIH and interagency meetings. NRCC membership is open to any federal staff member interested in carrying out any trans-NIH or trans-agency nutrition research efforts. NRCC meetings are chaired by the Director of the NIDDK Office of Nutrition Research. Scientific seminars and discussions are featured during the NRCC meetings as a means of disseminating information on nutrition research efforts and to stimulate new research in priority areas. The NRCC operates as an NIH-wide forum to review, stimulate, and encourage the support of nutrition research and training to better define the role of nutrition in the promotion and maintenance of health and in the prevention and treatment of disease. The NRCC also plays a key role in the development of nutrition research policy at the NIH. The goal of the NRCC is to review, stimulate, and encourage the necessary support of nutrition research and training and to define the role of nutrition in health promotion and disease prevention and management.

The purpose of this working group is to coordinate the efforts of multiple stakeholders (Department of State, Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Health and Human Services, private sector) to establish a stable, long-term domestic supply of Mo99 (molybdenum-99) for medical purposes. Such a supply needs to be consistent with current international goals (to which the US is an active participant) of reduction in the use of high-enriched uranium in all reactors, including Mo99 production facilities, as well as full cost recovery solutions.
