Established in 2024, the Disability Health Research Program (DHRP) provides strategic coordination of disability health research activities at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). DHRP accomplishes this by:
- Promoting a holistic vision of health and well-being for people with disabilities that harmonizes varied approaches to disability across NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices (ICOs)
- Setting agency-wide disability health research strategic goals and evaluating and optimizing the performance of strategies to achieve those goals in collaboration with NIH ICOs
- Serving as a central hub for disability health research at NIH, facilitating communication and collaboration with NIH ICOs and the public
Organizational Structure
DHRP is a part of the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI) in the NIH Office of the Director (OD). DPCPSI advances biomedical and behavioral science through crosscutting, innovative strategies that foster collaboration and synergies across NIH.
As the scientific nexus for the Office of the Director, DPCPSI coordinates research and activities across a range of research areas, including HIV/AIDS, behavioral and social sciences, data science, dietary supplements, disability health, disease prevention, Down syndrome, pediatric and human development, nutrition, precision medicine, tribal health, and women’s health. DPCPSI also builds research capacity through research infrastructure and NIH Common Fund programs and strengthens NIH stewardship of public funds through strategic planning, performance monitoring, portfolio analysis, evaluation, and reporting activities.
