Who: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office (SGMRO) is pleased to invite you to participate in an upcoming Regional Workshop on Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) Health Researchco-hosted by the Deep South Initiative for Advancing Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) Health Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health. We encourage students, postdocs, and new investigators in the region to attend!

What: The goals of the Regional Workshop are to increase understanding of the NIH structure and processes, develop mentoring relationships within the extramural research community, enhance capacity to conduct SGM research, and provide researchers with the opportunity to interact with NIH staff, community members, and established researchers in SGM health.

Who: The National Institutes of Health, in conjunction with the Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing at Northwestern University, is pleased to announce the Sexual & Gender Minority Health Research Workshop. We encourage students, postdocs, and new investigators in the region to attend! 

What: The goals of the workshop are to increase knowledge about NIH structure and grant processes; develop mentoring relationships within the extramural community in the Midwestern region; and enhance capacity in SGM health research.

September 2020 Regional Workshop

Who: The National Institutes of Health, in conjunction with the Equitas Health Institute, the Ohio State University (OSU) College of Public Health, OSU, College of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, and OSU Institute for Population Research, was pleased to host the Sexual & Gender Minority Health Research Workshop. We encourage students, postdocs, and new investigators in the region to attend! Due to COVID-19, this workshop was held in a virtual format!

What: The goals of the workshop are to: increase knowledge about NIH structure and grant processes; develop mentoring relationships within the extramural community in the Midwestern region; and enhance capacity in SGM health research.

More About the Workshops

The NIH FY 2016-2020 Strategic Plan to Advance Research on the Health and Well-Being of Sexual and Gender Minorities includes goals and objectives that aim to increase and improve SGM health research supported by NIH. Goal Three of the strategic plan is to Strengthen the Community of Researchers and Scholars Who Conduct Research Relevant to SGM Health and Well-Being. To achieve this goal, in part, the SGMRO routinely hosts regional workshops in SGM health research to build capacity within the extramural research community.

The goals of the regional workshops are to:

  • Increase understanding of the NIH structure and processes
  • Encourage mentoring relationships within the extramural research community
  • Enhance capacity to conduct SGM research
  • Provide researchers with the opportunity to interact with NIH staff and established researchers in SGM health
