As the next step in implementing the requirements of the NIH Health Reform Act of 2006, the NIH formally establish the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI) within the Office of the Director (OD). Activities directed by DPCPSI include:
- Identifying emerging scientific opportunities, rising public health challenges, or scientific knowledge gaps that merit further research
- Developing and applying resources (databases, analytic tools, and methodologies) and producing specifications for new resources in support of portfolio analyses and priority setting in scientific areas across NIH
- Assisting the NIH to address areas of emerging scientific opportunities and public health challenges effectively
- Planning, supporting, and providing technical assistance in the development of program evaluations comprising:
The Division also coordinates research and activities related to research on AIDS, behavioral and social sciences, women's health, disease prevention, rare diseases, and dietary supplements. DPCPSI incorporates all of the functions of the former Office of Portfolio Analysis and Strategic Initiatives (OPASI) and the OD Program Offices, and includes a new office on strategic coordination:
